Members of the Governing Body are the Trustees of the Charity and the Directors of the Company. The maximum number of Trustees is fifteen of whom six are appointed by the Members of the Institute at the AGM, a further six are appointed by the Governing Body and there are three ‘special’ appointments. One is Lord Iveagh’s representative to reflect the very long and close association between the charity and the Guinness family, another represents the Royal Society, and finally, to honour his unique contribution to the Lister Institute and UK science generally, Professor Sir Alec Jeffreys holds a personal life-time appointment. Most trustees serve for a period of six years and there is regular planned rotation of membership.
The current chair of the Governing Body is Professor Sir Alex Markham, Professor of Medicine at the University of Leeds, and former CEO of Cancer Research UK, taking over from Dame Bridget Ogilvie in September 2011. There are two other officers of the Governing Body: The Hon. Treasurer and Chair of the Finance and Investment Committee – Mr Michael French; and the Chair of the Scientific Advisory Committee – Professor Patrick Maxwell.
The Governing Body meets formally twice a year and oversees all of the Institute’s activities, designating responsibilities in specific areas to two sub-committees: The Finance and Investment Committee, and The Scientific Advisory Committee. The day-to-day business of the Governing Body is conducted electronically.
